Bee

There are over 4,000 species of bees. They are pollinators that gather nectar and pollen from flowers. The bees may be brown, black, or banded with yellow, white, or orange stripes. These bees are called native bees that have always lived in an area and are able to survive without humans. These bees don’t make honey or beeswax. However, they do pollinate 1/3 of our food crops. Most native bees are solitary and don’t form hives. These bees hardly ever sting. Honeybees and bumblebees are considered social. These social bees are the only bees to produce and store honey and they do sting if disturbed. When people talk of Killer bees they are referring to the Africanized honeybee. These African honeybees were brought to Brazil in 1956 and cross-bred with local honeybees to increase honey production. Unfortunately, these hybrid honeybees turned out to be very aggressive, deadly and poor honey producers. Since 1990 the killer bees have been discovered in South Texas.
