House Flies

House flies are more of a problem than you might suspect. They visit such places as dumps, sewers, and garbage heaps. They feed on fecal matter, discharges from wounds and sores. House flies may be guilty of transmitting at least 65 diseases to humans. Through their short three week life span, the flies regurgitate and excrete whenever they come to rest and thereby spread and transmit disease organisms. The Fly eggs are deposited in decaying matter such as grass clippings, garbage, human and animal excrement. Eggs hatch into worm-like creatures called maggots. The maggots feed on the material in which the eggs were laid. There are three larval molts before the larva changes into an adult house fly. House fly mouth parts are adapted for sponging up liquids, they cannot bite. House flies can only ingest liquid food. They feed on solid food by regurgitating saliva on it. The saliva is so strong that it liquefies the solid material which is then sucked up with the proboscis. Thoughts to ponder the next time you see flies flying around your outdoor picnic. They require lots of water since they are continually salivating and voiding liquids. Flies cannot breed in large numbers if their food sources are limited. Do not allow materials of manure, garbage, grass clippings, weed piles or other decaying organic matter to accumulate. Keep trash cans clean and tightly covered. Flies can be kept outside of homes and business by the use of window and door screens.
